Out and about

Driving through the magnificent Outeniqua Pass, across the majestic Outeniqua Mountain Range just north of George, followed by a short stint along the edge of the klein karoo, one comes to Oudtshoorn some 60 km distant - home of the famous Cango Caves and numerous Ostrich Farms that have well-established tourist facilities and which offer daily tours of their local operations. A pre-dawn balloon flight in Oudtshoorn offers captivating views of a truly African sunrise in this intriguing semi-desert region of the Westwern Cape. Few places on earth offer such diverse landscapes in so close proximity.

To the east lie the inland lakes and lagoons of Sedgefield and Knysna (50 km away). The lakes are popular boating, sailing and waterskiing venues and fishing and canoeing are year-round activities (power boating and waterskiing is not permitted in all waters). Surf fishing, paraboarding, paragliding and hang-gliding are popular activities, the airborne variety being popular between Wilderness and Sedgefield.

Knysna is famous for its oysters and waterfront where a variety of boat and yacht excursions are available for visitors to choose from. Knysna is also an embarkation point for the famous Outeniqua Choo-Tjou, a steam train that makes daily trips between George and Knysna, along the scenic coastal route between those two cities. The waterfront is also bedecked with restaurants where the famous Knysna oyster can be sampled. The oyster factory itself, with its own restaurant, is a mere two minutes away from the waterfront. Here oysters may be purchased en-mass if desired. Beyond Knysna lie Plettenberg Bay and Storm River, a popular bungee-jumping venue in the Tsitsikamma Reserve. Here the vegetation is largely tropical in nature, being dense and green with tall trees, long vines and thick fern-rich undergrowth. River tubing, canoeing and abseiling are popular activities here and Storm River is a popular tourist and corporate team-building venue.

To the west lies George and a short distance further, Mossel Bay. The latter offers shark diving opportunities and cage diving is a thriving tourist industry here. George boasts a crocodile farm and an intriguing Rail and Transport Museum that is also an embarkation point for the Outeniqua Choo-Tjou. George is also home to a number of well-known golf courses, and approximately nine golf courses are situated within a 50 km radius of Wilderness. Both George and Mossel Bay offer scenic flights up and down the Garden Route.

Beyond Mossel Bay lies Albertinia, home of the famous Aloe factories that manufacture and sell health and skin care products. Beyond lies Stillbaai, Gansbaai, Swellendam, the Overberg, Bredasdorp, Arniston (with its quietly magnificent and delightfully photogenic white-walled historic fishing village, now preserved as a national trust), Cape Aghulas (the Southernmost tip of Africa with its famous lighthouse), Hermanus (the 'Principality of Whales' with the town's own 'Whale-crier') and ultimately Cape Town. (See map below).

Wilderness Village boasts a local tourism office and your hosts will also assist with advice and guidance whenever and wherever possible.
